Keeping your canine companion tangle free isn’t always easy, especially when that companion has long fur – and lots of it. In this blog post, Priscilla Barletta, Co-Founder of g’oodles explains why dogs get matting and what you can do to prevent it.
Matting happens when tangled clumps of fur form and can lead to discomfort, skin issues, and even the need for extensive grooming or shaving. To ensure your dog’s coat remains healthy, beautiful and tangle-free, it’s important to implement proper grooming practices. Although regular grooming is a must, prevention is half the battle.
Keep friction to a minimum
Harnesses, collars, leads and jackets – anything that sits against your dog’s fur and causes friction, can cause matting. We’re not telling you to stop using these things but give your dog a bit of nakey time. Remove their collar or harness and let problem areas like their belly, chest and neck be free from friction.
Brush regularly
It’s a misconception that breeds like Cavoodles and Groodles don’t shed hair, they still do. But rather than finding it in tumbleweeds on your floor, it gets stuck in their coats and needs to be brushed out. Use a detangling spray and brush through their coat at least three times per week. Follow up with a comb to make sure all the knots are out.
Book your dog in for a groom
Failing to keep up a good grooming routine will cause matts in your dog – that’s a fact! A professional groomer can expertly detangle and maintain your dog’s coat, ensuring it stays in optimal condition. Depending on your dog’s breed and coat type, schedule regular grooming appointments to keep their fur in top shape.
Make bath time a habit
Regular baths are essential for maintaining a clean and healthy coat. Use a high-quality dog shampoo suitable for your dog’s specific needs. Make sure you dry their fur thoroughly to prevent dampness which can lead to tangles.
Stick to a healthy diet
Just like in us humans, a well-balanced and nutritious diet contributes to healthy skin and coat in dogs. Give your dog high-quality food that includes essential nutrients like Omega-3 fatty acids, which promote healthy fur. Your local vet can give dietary recommendations tailored to your dog’s specific needs.
Stay on top on allergies
If your dog is constantly scratching itself, they may have an allergy. Allergies can stem from their diet or the environment. Consult your vet if your dog has excessive itching and they’ll help you find the appropriate treatment. Constant itching of the fur causes friction which can lead to increased knots and matts, making your dog even more uncomfortable.
Keep your dog hydrated
Proper hydration is crucial for keeping your dog’s coat healthy. Make sure your dog always has access to fresh water. Dehydration can lead to dry and brittle fur, increasing the risk of matting.
Exercise your dog regularly
Regular exercise not only keeps your dog (and you) physically fit but also contributes to their overall well-being, including the condition of their coat. Engaging in physical activity stimulates blood flow and supports the distribution of essential nutrients to the skin and hair follicles.
Preventing dog fur from matting requires consistent effort and attention, but it’s well worth the reward of having a happy and healthy pup. Regular grooming, a balanced diet, proper hydration, and exercise all play a crucial role in keeping your dog’s coat in pristine condition.
